In 1767, as a primitivo poblador, he was granted Mier 3 by the King of Spain. Luis Lopez de Jaen served as a surveyor for the Crown in Camargo during the Visita General of 1767. He had an improved rancho at this place. He had relocated there from La Laguna on the San Juan River in Camargo, when possession of the land was given to the Mission (Greaser, New Guide, 56). He also stated that due to the injuries done to him by the Indians he had relocated to Mier (GLO, Visita General, 191). This tract is located next to that of his uncle, Manuel Hinojosa, one of the earliest settlers in the area. However, according to the 1782 church census, Luis Lopez lived at Rancho Santa Gertrudis, on the other side of the river.
