In 1767, as an antiguo poblador, Francisco de la Garza Ballesteros was granted Mier 78 by the King of Spain. The tract was originally granted to Francisco de la Garza Ballesteros (1185). However, he did not appear to have a ranch at the site, but instead resided at Rancho de las Juntas del Rio, East side (property of Francisco Guerra, porcion 66, 1784-1790) He also purchased in 1790 porcion 111 in Carmargo (a non-riverine porcion directly north from porcion 78). He was married to Juana Reyna, and before coming to Mier they were residents of the Valle de Carrizal (Salinas Victoria). They are described as coyote on baptispmal records in Nuevo Leon (mestizo and indian) but are listed as español on the Mier padrones.
Acts of possession indicate that Maria de la Garza (1127, relative of Francisco?), widow of Lucas Gonzalez (1424), received possession of the tract in 1768. Lorenzo and Maria are both listed as mestizo and were original settlers in Camargo. They were from the hacienda of Pesqueria Chica in Nuevo Leon.
In 1854 Juan Garza Sarabia was paying taxes on the tract. Juan Garza Sarabia was a grandson of Francisco Garza Ballesteros so it appears he did in fact retain ownership of the tract.
After 1858, Lorenzo Bazan and Lazaro Lopez Garza paid taxes on the tract. Lorenzo Bazan may have been a grandson of Ana Maria de la Garza.
